La Barca

Crowded together in small houses, women, men and children of La Barca survive by the migration in the seek for work, specially into the north of the country, also to the United States. Their employment as farm laborers leaves some resources to live and return to their community, hardly with basic services.

La Barca community was built in 2005 after an earthquake destroyed the houses built with adobe and wood. It is located in Cochoapa el Grande, the municipality with the highest level of poverty in Mexico, in La Montaña, Guerrero. Statistics from the UN compare its Human Development Index similar as subsaharian Africa

Their language tu´un savy, "the language of the rain" or mixteco does not only communicate words, also their music and the life where the individual depends on the community and the natural resources are the principal source of life.

The primary school was built, even, with their own hands, using the wood of the forests to build the walls and buying the laminated roof
by cooperating, because, they say, nor local nor state government helped in this process.

Images captured between october 2009 and july 2010. Some were exhibited by Procesofoto agency and was published in Nuestra Mirada.
